The Goose is Not Cooked

Rich "Goose" Gossage stirred up a hornet's nest by calling out Jose Bautista, one of the most feared hitters in the game a "disgrace". The Hall of Fame pitcher said that Bautista's bat flinging and other preening after hitting home runs was disrespectful to his opponents and the game itself. Goose went on to complain about modern players poorly honed fundamentals and lack of game smarts.

The Goose also was disapproving of rules changes and instant replays. Pitchers being prevented from throwing inside, and all manner of modernizations up to and including the widespread use of Sabremetrics.

I saw an interview Goose gave with a couple of sports talk show guys from Toronto, Bautista's team's hometown. These guys were actually defending the lack of sportsmanship displayed by Bautista and so many others. Very self serving of them, and moronic as well. If I lived in the Toronto area, I can tell you that this show and these guys wouldn't get a second listen.

Of course, Goose is right. All of his critiques are spot on accurate, right on the money. It's just too bad that it doesn't really matter anymore.

The modern trends in Baseball are unstoppable. The game today is moving inexorably away from what Goose, and I, remember what was once great about the game.

One more thing....

Get off my lawn!!!
