The 2016 Republican Convention will be held in Cleveland later this year. It could be a very interesting event.
With only weeks before the Iowa caucuses, the leading Republican candidate is Donald Trump. Trump is making the Republican elites quite nervous. Trump is a loose cannon, and has no ties to the Republican establishment. It's been fun watching the other candidates squirm as Trump has run a campaign like no other. His bombastic racist comments have put off many, but only served to enhance his popularity among Republican voters.
While Trump is a vile and awful candidate, and human being also, I find his ascension to the top of the polls hilarious. He represents the chickens coming home to roost for the Republican party that has obsessively obstructed any semblance of governing in the nation's capital. With Trump saying plainly what all manner of Republican politicians have implied over the past several decades, the party and its candidates can't run and hide from Trump's statements or policies. Their squirming is too funny!
I hope that Trump survives until the convention, when it's likely a back room deal will squelch his candidacy. It will make for great political theater, and it should also smash the Republican party on the national level.
Then, of course, there's always the chance Trump could win....
