Carolina in My Mind

Image result for confederate flag over south carolina

The Confederate flag still flies over the state capital in South Carolina. The flag, symbol of the treasonous south that took up arms against the United States in the Civil War for the cause of continued slavery, is claimed to be a symbol of "southern heritage". That's a bald faced lie. It is a paen to racist hatred and white supremacy.

In the aftermath of the racist killings of nine black people by an insane and deranged white man, I'm hearing a lot of Jesus-speak from this buckle of the Bible Belt. Hapless family members of the victims offering Christian forgiveness at the arraignment of the alleged shooter may give one cause for pause, and the white judge seeking healing and justice for families of both perpetrator and victims makes one wonder if true enlightenment is at hand.

But no, that is not the case. In 2015, there are still "black" churches. The Stars and Bars flies defiantly throughout the South. Voting rights are under ever increasing attack. Blacks are being shot dead across the country by police forces of predominantly white officers.

I don't pretend to understand the childlike forgiveness offered by the devout victims of the murderous race hatred in South Carolina. It does seem fortunate that for the sake of the whites of the south and elsewhere that Black Christians are pacified by their beliefs. It's puzzling, and sad, that White Christians are content to maintain the status quo forever.
