The Mob Rules

So, even as gay rights and marriage equality are finally being secured in the land of the free and the home of the brave, there still remain large pockets of resistance to this inexorable trend. The latest states to weigh in on preserving the right to discriminate against anyone or anything that violates one's "religious freedom" are Indiana and Arkansas. These states, and others before them , no doubt others after, have passed laws that set into the legal code, the perpetuation of discrimination against Americans that don't comport with the religious views of the citizenry at large, read "Christians".

There is something so un-American in these laws, so anti the ideals of this country that it is an unending shame upon these states, and the people that voted in the lawmakers that pandered to these awful and repulsive constituencies. While the politicians look to minimize the reality of these laws, seeking to weasel out of responsibility for enacting these fascistic laws in the face of widespread condemnation it remains chilling to realize that in 2015, in the United States of America, there remains in vast portions of the country, a willingness to withhold civil rights from large groups of Americans that have been fought and died for, for over two hundred years.

It is the modern failure of our democracy that has devolved into ochlocracy, mob rule, that we are now left with. Given the indifference to the odious gerrymandering that makes real democracy impossible, it doesn't look like it's going to change any time soon. This country seems destined to continue splitting into separate and distinct culturally divided sections. The American Experiment is looking mighty wobbly right around now.
