Today, our family had to euthanize two of our pet rats, Fluffy and Squiggles. They were great pets, much loved by my children. Their quality of life had degraded greatly as the tumors they were afflicted with continued to grow. It wasn't an easy decision, but it was the only humane choice we had.
It wasn't easy for my daughter to understand the need for this. Her 10-year-old's outlook doesn't allow for decisions that while correct, bring anguish. I hope that the painful day our family has had today will serve to help her to cope with the inevitable losses the future holds for her, as it holds for everyone.
