We have here two rather unseemly explanations for this lunacy. Number one is that with the ascendance of the radical Christian right, and their complete co-opting of the Republican party, these Republican politicians are pandering to these zealots. Cynical, yes, but calculated none the less. Number two, is that these numbskulls are just anti-intellectual Neanderthals that actually don't believe in science. Either choice is quite distasteful.
